Zhangjiajie becomes exhausting when treated as one giant attraction. It is easier to plan as two landscapes: the national forest park near Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain beside Zhangjiajie city.
Where to base yourself
Stay in Wulingyuan for the first two nights if the forest park is your priority. You will start earlier, avoid repeating the drive from the city, and have an easier evening after a long walking day. Move to Zhangjiajie city before Tianmen Mountain or your departure if the transport schedule makes that useful.
Day 1: Yuanjiajie and the high viewpoints
Enter early and make one of the upper scenic areas your main focus. Yuanjiajie is famous for narrow sandstone pillars and broad viewpoints. Elevators, cableways, shuttle buses, and queues can change the rhythm of the day, so choose one main circuit and leave room for delays.
Day 2: Tianzi Mountain or a quieter valley
Use weather to decide. On a clear day, choose another high mountain route such as Tianzi Mountain. In mist or low cloud, a lower valley walk can be more rewarding than waiting at a blank viewpoint. Good rain gear and shoes with grip matter more here than an ambitious checklist.
Day 3: Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain is a separate full experience with a long ascent, cliff paths, and the great natural arch known as Heaven’s Gate. Book the appropriate admission route in advance and allow generous time before a flight or train; queues and mountain weather make tight connections stressful.
Three days gives you the major landscapes without requiring back-to-back dawn starts. Add a fourth day if photography is central to your trip or if you want a weather buffer. If your itinerary is already crowded, keep Zhangjiajie as a destination of its own rather than attaching it casually between distant cities.
